The Importance of Desulfurization
Many common and commercial fuels, such as natural gas, gasoline, and JP-8 (a jet fuel), contain some amount of sulfur compounds. However, sulfur interferes with chemical reactions and leads to hydrochloric acid when burned. Specifically, sulfur significantly degrades fuel cells and hydrochloric acid is a primary cause of acid rain. Desulfurization is the process of removing the sulfur from these fuels so that they can be safely used for fuel cells and other purposes.
